Meet Hadleigh’s Budding Photographer… Alison Wood!

Hadleigh Castle

With Hadleigh soon to be hosting the Mountain Biking Event for London Olympics 2012, it seems the perfect opportunity to have a budding young photographer providing the public with beautiful cards and canvas prints of the town itself.

Alison Wood has been taking photographs for the last 10 years, yet it was during her soul searching trip to California that she really began to think of photography as a profession. During her career break on America’s West Coast, Alison took thousands of photographs on her Canon 450D camera.

Photography has always been a passionate hobby of Alison’s, but it’s only since returning from her travels that she has directed her focus to snap-shots of Hadleigh. Other neighbouring areas comprised in Alison’s photography include; Leigh on Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea, Thorpe Bay, Rayleigh and Rochford.

Alison offers a unique selection of cards, canvases and framed prints featuring her local photography. You can find her cards on sale at The Salvation Army Tea Rooms, whilst her cards and canvases are on sale in Hadleigh’s Maison Noir (in the florists & gift shop) and now also at the Oasis Coffee House, Leigh-on-Sea.

Having seized the opportunity to meet Alison, I was able to ask her some vital questions about life, living locally and her love of photography…

How do you feel your photography connects with its audience?

“Through my photography, I have been able to re-discover the area in which I grew up and share its beauty with others. I’m delighted that I can pursue and develop my passion for photography in my local area”.

What influenced you to take photos in Hadleigh and the local area?

“I love local area photography and having recently returned to my home town of Hadleigh, I noticed there was a gap in the market for it, so I thought it would be a great opportunity, especially with the up-coming Olympics. It’s great to have the chance to combine my passion forphotography with my love for the local area”.

What are your aspirations for the future in regards to your photography?

“I would like to have a presence in more places and would love my name to be associated with Hadleigh. Part of my ground work for now is entering photography competitions, of which I have entered two recently”.

In June this year, Alison entered ‘The Great British Life National Countryside Photography Competition’ with one of her photographs of Hadleigh Castle, where she gained a place as regional finalist. Shortly after, in July, Alison entered one of the ‘Pic Stop’ photo competitions where she gained second place!

If you would like to view Alison’s work, she exhibits her work monthly at the Hadleigh Farmer’s Market as well as taking part in local craft fairs frequently. For more information on Alison’s work, visit her website here.
