The Hadleigh Sculpture commissioned by Wm Morissons Supermarkets Plc is now proudly located at the entrance to Hadleigh, for residents and shoppers to admire. Sculpted by Graham Ibbeson, the stunning masterpiece was unveiled on 30th March. Hadleigh’s new Morrisons store has recognised the highlights of this fantastic town by erecting the sculpture and paying tribute to Hadleigh Castle, the Salvation Army and James (Cunning) Murrell.
The statue has been cleverly designed to include the important elements of Hadleigh’s history and culture, for instance the brick plinth that holds the sculpture is constructed from reclaimed bricks from the Salvation Army Brickworks. Whilst the base of the sculpture, features the 1950’s child on a tricycle, signifying the children of Hadleigh inspired to move forwards.
The sculpture comprises of bronze with the use of modern stainless steel and incorporates the community of Hadleigh – both past and present – with the celebration of the 2012 Mountain Bike Olympic event. The main body of the sculpture is a 2 metre high Bronze tower depicting Hadleigh Castle. On top of the tower are three cyclists, structured from stainless steel and commemorating the holding of the Olympic Games Mountain Biking event in Hadleigh (to be held on August 11th & 12th).
Inspiration for the sculptor came from local groups meetings, as did the murals featured within the large glass windows of Morissons. Creating a great sense of community, the Hadleigh Sculpture design reflects the Hadleigh’s heritage – both old and new – as well as the aspirations for the forthcoming mountain biking Olympic event.
